Alpine Explorers in the Heart of Switzerland

When people ask where Alpine Explorers is based, the answer is simple: right in the middle of Switzerland. Our home is on the shores of Lake Zug (Zugersee), a peaceful lakeside setting surrounded by rolling countryside, historic villages, and some of the country’s most famous mountains. Zug is where the Swiss Plateau on the north side meets the Alps to the south, the perfect starting point for hiking in Central Switzerland. Getting to Zug from Zurich Airport only takes 50min by train - and only 30min from Zurich.

Map of Switzerland
Alpine Explorers’s piece of Switzerland at a glance. From Zugersee you’re surrounded by lakes, mountains, and historic towns, all within easy reach by train, boat and gondola.

Zugersee and its Countryside

Zugersee is a beautiful lake framed by gentle hills, forested trails, and the distant snow-capped Alps. Just above it lies Zugerberg, a peaceful plateau of wildflower meadows and panoramic walking trails; ideal for hiking or exploring by e-bike. From here, you can enjoy authentic Swiss countryside within minutes of the town and train station.

The Neighbouring Cantons of Central Switzerland

From Zugersee, you’re at the crossroads of Central Switzerland. Within 30–60 minutes you can reach:

  • Lucerne,  famous for its medieval old town and Kapellbrücke, as well as being the gateway to Mount Pilatus and Mount Rigi - two of the best day trips from Zurich.

  • Schwyz,  one of the founding cantons of Switzerland, home to the striking twin Mythen peaks and rich alpine traditions.

  • Uri,  where steep valleys meet Lake Uri, with the historic Gotthard route leading south into the Alps.

  • Obwalden & Nidwalden,  dramatic alpine landscapes including Engelberg and the high peak of Titlis, where snow and glaciers are within easy reach year-round.

A Region Built for Adventure

What makes this region so special is how connected it is. Cog railways, gondolas, and mountain trains climb straight from lakeside towns to high alpine ridges. Within a short journey you can experience everything from gentle lakeside walks to challenging summit hikes,  making it one of the best bases for exploring the Swiss Alps.

Why We’re Here

Alpine Explorers is built around this central location. From our base at Zug, we guide hikes and e-bike tours that let you see Switzerland at its most authentic;  not just the postcard views, but the countryside, the quiet trails, and the hidden paths between the famous peaks.

If you’re planning a trip to Switzerland, think of us as your launchpad into the Alps. Whether it’s a day trip from Zurich or a longer adventure, we’d love to show you around.
